This is Free Zone

For us, we often feel the effects of the EU when travelling. Even obtaining a visa is a task in itself. This is something that isn’t consistent with what a union is or should be. By definition, a union is the action of joining together with common interests. But in today’s current climate - it feels like anything but this.

In the past, we’ve seen what happens to Unions once problems start to arise. And there’s no better example the former Soviet Union. History tells us that issues such as refugees seeking asylum, social differences, race, religion and gender all play a part in these downfalls. The current EU comes across as tolerant entity in the current social climate, but this is a blind tolerance. These social borders are clearer than ever. In a way, it is almost hypocritical.

Consisting of 28 countries, each with their own unique culture, the EU feels divided across every border. Whether it’s documents, race or religion, the current state of the EU takes away any opportunity of feeling free. And it isn’t just the EU who is faced with such issues, it’s the whole world, and our ability to fight for peace and equality almost doesn't exist. But this is our reality. If it were really a union, then why hasn’t anybody opened their doors to each other? Look at the world’s landscape via a map, there aren’t any borders, just the borders we have created.

If the EU really were what a union ought to be, we need to relax these borders. This is Free Zone and represents what we feel like is happening inside of the EU today.

After a trip to Iceland, we were inspired by the local textures and landscapes, and dedicated the artwork to this classic & world-renowned beer brand. We imagined this dark and rough combination of volcanic rock coupled with the famous Guinness stout foam.
